For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of a small party, he was almost surrounded, but with great courage and determination he launched a counter-attack, killing and wounding a large number of the enemy, and capturing eighteen prisoners and a machine gun. His gallant and prompt action delayed the
enemy, and enabled troops in the rear to get into position.
